BIOGRAPHY:

WILEY HAUSAM is a long- time arts administrator and presenter of theater, dance, music, cabaret and opera. He is a producer of new plays, classic theater and musical theater, a university teacher, a published editor and a consultant.

From 2002 - 2007, he was the first executive director of the JACK H. SKIRBALL CENTER for the Performing Arts at NEW YORK UNIVERSITY, opening a new 850-seat facility, staffing a new organization, and managing and programming its first five seasons of world-class theater, music, dance, opera and public affairs events.

With a small staff and budget, he successfully established the Skirball Center in New York City's competitive cultural landscape. Critical response to Skirball Center programming was overwhelmingly positive, especially from the New York Times. In addition, he oversaw fundraising and marketing efforts for the theater. In every year Hausam was the executive director, the theater outperformed budget targets (both expense and revenue.) When he departed, $1 million remained in the theater's operating fund.

Some notable Skirball presentations are The Abbey Theatre of Dublin's production of Synge's The Playboy of the Western World (2004), Mabou Mines Red Beads (world premiere - 2005), the Gate Theatre of Dublin's acclaimed production of Beckett's Waiting for Godot (2006), New York City Opera's Vox Festival (2006, 2007), Fest Forward: Hip-Hop Unbound (2006) and Dance Party! (commissions and world premieres; Misnomer Dance Theater and Keigwin & Company; 2007).

In 2007, he produced John Gregor's new musical With Glee at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and appeared on the PBS television program Think Tank with Ben Wattenberg to discuss the contemporary American musical.

From 1993 - 2002, he was the associate producer of THE PUBLIC THEATER/NEW YORK SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL working under producer George C. Wolfe. In addition to his work overseeing the theater's new musical development, he was a key participant in the theater's long-range planning, developed its marketing and publications departments, and acted as co-producer of four shows on Broadway (including the Tony winning Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk and the LaChiusa/Wolfe The Wild Party).

He also opened JOE'S PUB for the Public and launched its acclaimed Songbook Series (1998 - 2002) with Broadway star Audra McDonald's first solo concert. This series of intimate concerts featured the rising generation of theater songwriters including Jason Robert Brown, John Bucchino, Ricky Ian Gordon, Adam Guettel and Michael John LaChiusa. In addition to McDonald, these programs were sung by Ute Lemper (New York City cabaret debut), Billy Stritch, David Campbell, Dawn Upshaw, Betty Comden & Adolph Green (in a triumphant late- life return to cabaret), Lea DeLaria, Mary Cleere Haran, Faith Prince, Patti LuPone, Lauren Flanigan, Peter Cincotti (New York City cabaret debut), the Portuguese fado singer, Misia, among many others. The series won the 2001 Backstage Bistro Award.

In 1999, for Nonesuch Records, Hausam produced two acclaimed concerts at Town Hall featuring composer Adam Guettel and Audra McDonald.

From 1986 - 1993, he was a theater, television and film literary agent at INTERNATIONAL CREATIVE MANAGEMENT representing such acclaimed and successful theater artists as George C. Wolfe, Anna Deavere Smith, Doug Wright, Jose Rivera, Michael John LaChiusa, Jonathan Larson, Scott Frankel, Gerald Gutierrez, Robert Falls and Mark Lamos. Early in his career he worked in administration and production at major opera houses in Chicago and Houston.

Since 2001, Hausam has taught at the GRADUATE MUSICAL THEATRE WRITING PROGRAM at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

For Theatre Communications Group, he edited The New American Musical, an anthology of Floyd Collins, Rent, Parade and The Wild Party. It is available online through www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com

He has consulted for such companies as the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Santa Fe Opera.

Hausam received a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern Universiy's School of Music. Subsequently, he studied management at NU's Kellogg Graduate School of Management, philosophy of art at Columbia University (under professor Lydia Goehr) and fundraising at New York University. He lives in New York City.
